Rhys Murphy leaves Oldham

RHYS Murphy is the latest man to leave OLDHAM ATHLETIC as the Latics prepare for the 2016/17 season.

After leading the club to League One survival last term, manager John Sheridan left to take over at League Two side Notts County.

Keeper David Cornell, defender Joe Mills and midfielder Mike Jones were the most notable names to be released when the club announced its retained list.

And although the Latics are yet to appoint a new manager, they put in place a new backroom team featuring Peter Shirtliff, Lee Turnbull and former Bournemouth and Doncaster boss Sean O’Driscoll.

But Shirtliff stepped down just five days later due to personal reasons, while captain Liam Kelly was sold to League Two Leyton Orient for an undisclosed fee.

Strike pair Jonathan Forte and Dominic Poleon have both opted to move on, to Notts County and AFC Wimbledon, respectively. And on Thursday the Latics accepted a nominal fee to let fellow forward Murphy join ambitious National League side Forest Green.

The former Arsenal trainee caught the eye with 13 goals for Dagenham & Redbridge during the 2013/14 season, before Oldham signed him in February 2015. But the 25-year-old failed to reproduce that form with the Latics as he was used mainly as a substitute and last season was sent out on loan to Crawley and AFC Wimbledon.

However, there was some positive news at Boundary Park this week as defender Brian Wilson signed a one-year contract extension while the club look set to finally name their new manager, Motherwell assistant Stephen Robinson.
