BURY have agreed to release goalkeeper Chris Kirkland just two days before the start of their League One campaign.
The former England and Liverpool keeper joined the Shakers this summer after leaving Preston and was set to battle it out with fellow new boy Ben Williams to start Saturday’s opener at home to Charlton.
However, the 35-year-old asked for time away from the game to spend time with his family and Bury agreed to cancel his contract with immediate effect.
Kirkland spent six years with WIGAN between 2006 and 2012 and the Latics added further competition to their keeper ranks this summer by signing Adam Bogdan on loan from Liverpool.
Wigan already had Jussi Jaaskelainen and Lee Nicholls on their books but this week agreed to sell Nicholls to MK Dons for an undisclosed fee. The 23-year-old youth product joined the League One side on a two-year deal.
Defender Jason Pearce could line up against Bury on Saturday after Wigan also agreed to sell him for an undisclosed fee, with Charlton signing the 28-year-old on a three-year deal.
BOLTON have re-signed David Wheater on a one-year deal. The 29-year-old centre-half was out of contract at the end of last season but was invited on trial by new boss Phil Parkinson and has taken a pay cut to remain at the Macron.
Wanderers also reached a mutual agreement with Filip Twardzik this week for the Czech midfielder to leave the club with immediate effect.
After signing Darius Osei from Stalybridge Celtic last week, OLDHAM dipped into the non-league ranks again to sign Ousmane Fane from Kidderminster. The 22-year-old midfielder has signed a two-year deal after being on trial with the Latics during pre-season.
That makes it 14 signings in a month by new Latics boss Steve Robinson, who has also confirmed he has put in a bid for Kilmarnock striker Josh Magennis.
MACCLESFIELD made one last move before their opener at home to Torquay, signing former Birmingham left-back Mitch Hancox after the 22-year-old impressed on trial.
ALTRINCHAM signed keeper Callum Preston from Crawley to battle it out for a starting berth with fellow new boy Andrew Dawber, while STOCKPORT COUNTY signed Craig Carney on non-contract terms after the midfielder spent all of pre-season with the Hatters.
National League North rivals STALYBRIDGE CELTIC have completed their squad after making five signings this week while midfielder Dale Wright has been released. Manager Liam Watson brought in defender Aaron Walters and midfielder Jimmy Ball, along with strikers Kurt Sherlock, Paul Foy and Kevin Lettany.
